Visit a weekly outdoor oceanfront market or watch surfers ride the waves during island surf competitions.
PLACES TO PLAY
Visit Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, featuring more than 288 acres of seashore, hiking trails and protected coastal species like loggerhead sea turtles and piping plovers. For unforgettable sunset views, grab a day-permit and take your own four-wheel-drive vehicle out for a cruise along the beach strand. Enjoy a quiet picnic or relax by the sea at Ocean Front Park & Pavilion, featuring a walking path and a play area perfect for children. Or, try your hand at a round of disc golf at Joe Eakes Park. Have a ball at one of the park’s baseball, volleyball, basketball or tennis courts, perfect for some light activity or more serious competition.
DEEP BLUE SEA
Explore the wonders of aquatic environments and diving shows at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. See Asian small-clawed otters, meet a rescued bald eagle and watch sharks glide alongside rays and eels. Wander outdoors to explore the aquarium’s garden, or discover the Nature Play area and Adventure Reef playground. Charter a dive with a local scuba outfitter to one of the area’s historic shipwrecks including The Condor, North Carolina’s first Heritage Dive Site and one of the best-preserved shipwrecks on the North Carolina coast. Visitors can also learn about the ship’s history on land at Fort Fisher State Historic Site. Embark on a kayak adventure to Shark Tooth Island or Zeke's Island Reserve. The reserve is home to many rare species including great blue herons, white ibis and more.
