Must-Visit Attractions
Visit two of the state’s most popular attractions, the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher and Fort Fisher State Historic Site, for educational, entertaining experiences. The aquarium features an Adventure Reef outdoor play area and kid-friendly exhibits like the Otters on the Edge habitat, as well as behind-the-scenes tours and summer camp programs. At Fort Fisher State Historic Site, follow interpretive signage along the scenic trail to view the remaining earthworks and a restored gun emplacement. Visit the museum to see replicas of blockade runners, weapons and timelines of history.
For more family fun, head to Ocean Front Park & Pavilion and enjoy a playground and an oceanfront boardwalk with bench swings. The park also hosts events like Turtle Talks, Story Time by the Sea and the Boogie in the Park concert series. Rent fishing rods and compete for the biggest catch at the century-old Kure Beach Fishing Pier. Cool off and play classic games at the Hi-Tech Arcade across the street.
Outdoor Paradise
Explore a 6-mile stretch of protected shoreline at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. Hike the state park’s tranquil Basin Trail to find diverse wildlife and a WWII bunker, once home to the fabled Fort Fisher Hermit. After purchasing the required seasonal permit, take your four-wheel-drive vehicle onto the sand to reach a secluded surf fishing spot and stop in the visitor center for educational exhibits. Embark on a guided kayak tour to an island nature preserve. Get active at Joe Eakes Park, which features facilities for baseball, volleyball, basketball, tennis and disc golf.
