Quiet, scenic and steeped in history, Kure Beach is a laid-back retreat for those seeking a slower pace. With oceanfront eats, natural wonders and small-town character, this itinerary is your guide to a peaceful coastal getaway.

Duration: 3 days

Available: Year-round

Day 1: Pier Views and Cozy Vibes

Afternoon
Drop Your Bags
Whether you're staying at a laid-back oceanfront rental or a vintage-inspired motel, you’ll find Kure Beach offers a peaceful, small-town escape with a big coastal heart. Take some time to settle in and slip into the slower pace of island life.

Evening
Pre-dinner Stroll: Kure Beach Fishing Pier
Stretch your legs and take in the views at one of the oldest wooden piers on the East Coast. Open year-round, the Kure Beach Fishing Pier is free to explore if you’re not fishing (passes are available at the on-site tackle shop). Snap a few golden-hour photos from the sand or watch the waves roll in from the pier deck.

Casual Dinner: Freddie’s Restaurant
A Kure Beach staple, Freddie’s is a cozy, family-owned Italian spot that has people driving hours just for dinner. Open nightly at 4:30, the restaurant’s atmosphere is intimate and welcoming—perfect after a travel day. Reservations are recommended, and whatever you do, don’t skip the legendary pork chops.

Day 2: Coffee, Coastline and Calabash

Morning
Coffee at Happy Hippies Java Hut
Start the day with a cold brew (or their signature Mermaid Magic) from this colorful, eclectic coffee shop tucked just off the beach. With funky décor and cute merch, the cozy coffee spot has seasonal hours, so it's worth checking their socials before you go.

Main Attraction: Have a beach day at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area
Spend the morning on wide-open stretches of beach at this preserved coastal park. Ideal for swimming, beachcombing or just relaxing with a good book, Fort Fisher offers a more tranquil take on the Carolina coast. Relax ocean side or explore the 4WD access for a beach adventure. Looking to be on two feet instead? Explore the trails instead. Try the Basin Trail, an easy 2.2-mile hike complete with boardwalks, marshes and a beautiful outlook. This is a perfect photo spot for a vacation.

Afternoon
Late Lunch at Riverview Restaurant
Tucked along the Cape Fear River, Riverview is a pet-friendly gem with some of the best views in Kure Beach. Order at the counter and dig into seafood baskets or classic po’boys. It’s simple, satisfying, and exactly what a beach day lunch should be.

Explore the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher
Cool off indoors with a visit to the aquarium, home to sea turtles, eels, rays and even a rescued bald eagle. Touch tanks, fossil digs and immersive exhibits make this a hit with all ages. Tickets must be reserved online in advance, and the space is fully wheelchair accessible.

Evening
Dinner at Big Daddy’s Restaurant
This beloved local landmark serves Calabash-style seafood sourced from nearby fishermen and farmers. With live music on weekends and a festive outdoor patio, it’s a great place to toast the day with crab legs, hushpuppies or a heaping platter of fresh-caught fish.

Optional Late-night Activity: Carolina Beach Bars
Looking to keep the night going? Just a short drive away, Carolina Beach offers a lively bar scene. Grab a frozen drink at Fat Pelican (featured in a few films), sip a local brew at SeaWitch Tiki Bar or catch live music at Hurricane Alley's. The boardwalk buzzes well into the night.

Day 3: Diners and Historic Discovery

Morning
Breakfast at Ocean View Restaurant
This quaint family-owned diner lives up to its name. Start your final morning with a plate of lemon blueberry buttercream pancakes, biscuits and gravy or their signature fried chicken and waffles. It’s comfort food with a view.

Daytime Activity: Fort Fisher State Historic Site
Step back in time at the site of the largest land-sea battle of the Civil War. Wander the visitor center and museum, view historical reconstructions like the Bombproof Shelter, and walk the scenic half-mile tour trail. The center is fully ADA-compliant, with interpretive exhibits and public restrooms.

Departure
After three days of coastal charm, historic insights and relaxed adventure, it’s time to say goodbye to Kure Beach. But don’t be surprised if you’re already planning your next return.
