If serene wildlife views are the way to your heart, check out Fort Fisher State Recreation Area for volunteer opportunities that vary from “live-in” campsite hosts to leading education workshops on astronomy, birding, and natural resources within the park. While our tourism-related businesses have reopened, help residents who are still in need get back to normal post-Florence, consider a donation to the Pleasure Island Disaster Relief Fund. This organization was created to assist with the immediate needs of hurricane victims and provides those in need with diapers, pet food, canned goods, tarps and more.

Once your volunteer hours are in, experience fall and holiday events at North Carolina’s Small Wonder. You won’t want to miss the 25th annual year of the island-wide Island of Lights Festival from November 23 through December 31. The month-long event brings nightly lighted displays, a Christmas Parade, Tour of Homes and a New Year’s Eve Celebration complete with a beach ball drop at midnight.

There is always something fun to experience at N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher that offers ongoing events year-round. Wander through a winter wonderland and set your sights on decorated trees at the Cape Fear Festival of Trees where local businesses decorate trees within the aquarium. Or, embark on an adventure where the whole family can volunteer under the sea and be educated visitors at touch pools, assist with special events and even help maintain fresh and saltwater exhibits.
