Celebrate the most caffeinated day of the year – National Coffee Day on Sept. 29 – at a unique coffee shop located steps from the Atlantic Ocean in Kure Beach – Happy Hippie Java Hut.
Kure Beach’s first and only java hut offers locals and visitors alike beverages created using North Carolina-roasted beans, including lattes, frappes, Nitro cold brew and signature sips, while non-coffee lovers can enjoy smoothies, lemonades and teas. Snacks, souvenirs and locally crafted paintings will be a hit among coffeeholics and non-coffee drinkers alike.
The most notorious beverage on the menu is Mermaid Magic – a delicious espresso-based drink complemented by other secret ingredients. Its recipe was concocted by the sister-duo who opened the shop last year after leaving the cold weather of the Midwest for the mild year-round temps of the South. After a sip, guests often try to figure out the combination of ingredients that makes up the sweet, yet balanced beverage, but that’s one secret the sisters will never share.
After you’ve grabbed your beverage or snack of choice, head outside and stroll along one of the oldest piers on the East Coast, the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. Then, set out for a day to explore treasures found throughout the island including the coquina rock formation at low tide located near Fort Fisher State Recreation Area or the remaining portion of the gigantic Fort Fisher earthworks at Fort Fisher State Historic Site.
