Beach Activities
The Town of Kure Beach offers five manual-push beach wheelchairs designed to maneuver over the sand, ensuring all visitors can enjoy the naturally beautiful shore. To reserve a chair for up to one week, please call (910) 458-2014.
Ocean Front Park is an accessible public green space with a front row view of the beach. Featuring a playground, oceanfront benches and an open-air pavilion that hosts special events throughout the year, the park provides simple seaside pleasures for all ages and abilities. Ocean Front Park Access #110 is one of several ADA-accessible public beach access points with a ramp leading to the beachfront. The nearby Kure Beach Fishing Pier connects to a wheelchair friendly ramp that allows everyone to access the nearly 720-foot wooden pier and savor its spectacular coastline views.
Accessible Signature Attractions
Satisfy your natural curiosity at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, which welcomes guests with varying mobility levels and sensory characteristics to discover aquatic wonders. Service animals are permitted, and wheelchairs are available on a first-come-first-served basis. To enhance the experience for guests with sensory needs, ASD Sensory Backpacks are available for checkout in partnership with KultureCity. The kits include noise-canceling headphones, fidget toys and a feelings thermometer. Additionally, guided tactile tours and ASL interpreters are available for visitors with blindness or low vision; however, two weeks’ notice is required.
Explore the history of the Civil War's largest land-sea battle at Fort Fisher State Historic Site. The accessible Visitor Center includes educational exhibits, shipwreck artifacts and an orientation video with a script available. The paved tour trail encircles the fort's remains and features descriptive exhibit panels. While the site’s paved pathways are wheelchair-accessible with assistance, the restored gun emplacement is not.
